My dog has a spot. Is it a skin infection? How long will it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 4 months and 17 days old | 11 lbs

Does it look like a skin infection? Or cyst? I saw it this morning. How long will it take to disappear?

Although form the picture is not really clear, it looks like a small spot of infection. This presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection can eventually be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. This could be due to a trauma or possibly the result of an infection (likely to be bacterial). A check up at your local vets and antibiotics (systemic or local ones), would be required to confirm diagnosis and solve the problem. Disinfection can be started at home with salt water baths, diluted hibiscrub or betadine solutions and a buster collar would be quite useful to avoid any licking.
