Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed
Hi, My name is Jamie. I have a cat and was wondering about the raw food diet. I have read it can be quite dangerous, bacteria and diseases. Would it be better to pre cook the meat/have a mixture of raw and cooked diet or what would you recommend? Any help is appreciated Kind regards Jamie

Hi Jamie, There are a lot of people who advocate for a raw food diet, but you are right that there are a lot of risk factors. There is not a medical benefit to feeding raw food over cooked food. I think a balanced homemade (cooked) or canned food diet are the safest for cats. Making a homemade diet and keeping it balanced can be quite a bit of work, so I currently feed my cats canned. I have attached a link below that may be useful for you. It has a lot of great information about cat food. http://catinfo.org I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using PetCoach.

My biggest concern with a raw diet is the increased risk of serious bacterial infections and parasitic infections. I have seen some get really sick from it. So if she is eating a high quality commercial cat Food then she should be getting all of her nutrients from them. if you want to add an extra treat you could add small amount of cooked or canned chicken or canned tuna to her food.

Hi there, and thank you for posting this question. I think it’s awesome that you want to put such effort into feeding quality off to your kitty. I do have concerns with a raw diet, mostly due to infections. Some animals will eat raw their whole lives and be fine, and some will get sick with things like salmonella and E. Coli. While I worry about the animal getting sick, I also really worry about the family as well. The latest study shows that 80%of people who feed their animals raw diet are colonized with salmonella or E.coli. So there is a pretty high human health risk. Would you consider cooking a diet for your kitty? You can have all the same benefits and less of the risk. I also really like the website Balanceit.com You can enter what you are feeding and they will let you know what vitamins/minerals you may be missing for a balanced diet. I think you will enjoy preparing meals for your kitty, and ultimately the decision about raw is yours. However, I would encourage you to consider a healthy home cooked diet for your and your kitty’s safety. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
