Should I worry if my cat licked saltwater after a dip in the ocean?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10.36 lbs

Our cat fell into sea water yesterday; body submerged except for his head. He got a big fright and wouldn't let us rinse him off with fresh water; instead he positioned himself under a table and licked himself "clean". Should we be concerned that he would have licked a lot of salt water off his body?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would not be concerned with him licking his hair coat clean. This should not cause any life threatening problems. I would try and get him bathed if possible though as the salt water can make the hair coat rough and dull. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any further questions or concerns you may have.
