Are FLUTD and FUS different names for the same cat urinary condition?

Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS) is now called Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) or Feline Idiopathic Cystitis (FIC). It is a condition involving, as the name states, the lower urinary tract (bladder, urethra). The condition presents with inflammation, difficulty urinating or crystals in urine. You are correct that FLUTD is non-infectious. FLUTD is a collection of diseases that all involve the urinary tract. Some have discrete causes that we can identify, but many do not. There is a similar condition in women called Interstitial Cystitis that also does not a definitive cause identified yet. I'm so sorry that you are dealing with this with Fred. Since there is blood in her urine, I would first continue to look for medical causes of blood in the urine if she doesn't have a history of urinary tract problems. Some owners see a cat struggling in the litter box and they assume constipation but it is usually a urinary problem. With her having a recent problem with her urinary tract/bladder I would assume this is a continuation of the problem. I suggest you get a second opinion with another vet. It sounds like your vet has done the appropriate things so far. It sounds like he may have FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorder) which is chronic and managed, never cured, so symptoms can come and go. Some cats even need anti-anxiety medications to decrease frequency of issues. If he's not producing urine, he needs to go to the vet immediately. But if he is producing urine, give your vet a call to see if they would recommend you restart the muscle relaxer and possibly something else. They may need you to bring Marley back in for another exam, or may be able to make a plan over the phone.

The life expectancy is the same for a cat that has undergone a PU surgery versus a cat that has not. No difference as long as there is not any underlying kidney damage. PU surgery is a permanent fix but it will not stop bladder stones from forming so a urinary blockage is still possible. Keeping him on a prescription diet ONLY is the best option to prevent recurrence of the problem.

Unfortunately no, there are no surgical procedures to prevent a reoccurrence of FLUTD. My own cat just had a bought of it, and I had to have him on pain medications as well as increasing his fluid intake. The best things you can do to prevent future occurrences with Ozzie is to make sure he is drinks plenty of water, keep feeding him the prescription diet, and have him lose weight if he's overweight. To encourage him to drink water, I would consider getting him a pet water fountain. It provides a continuing source of fresh water at all times, and cats love drinking from it. Prescription diets help maintain a healthy urinary tract, so it's important to keep feeding that. Try to get him some exercise as well, as that will help Ozzie maintain a healthy weight. Individual cats can respond very differently to different therapies and so there is not one single, best way to treat FIC. There are diets on the market that can dissolve struvite crystals and stones, but these are not effective in all cases. The concentration of the urine and the components of the diet are the most important factors long-term. Different brands of diets can sometimes work better in different cats. If the c/d diet is not working for Harry, you may want to try a different brand such as the Royal Canin urinary s/o diet. If he has only had one obstructive episode you do not necessarily need to proceed with a PU at this time, but keep in mind that if he has small stones present and continues have to have flare-ups, he is at risk for another blockage.
