Why is there bright red blood in my dog's formed poop after diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | 1 year and 1 month old | 40 lbs

Daisy started having diarrhea mid-day Saturday and had it all day Sunday. I started giving her white rice and boiled chicken with water mixed in to make sure she was staying hydrated. She didn’t poop all day today until about 20 mins ago when it was a formed poop but it had a bit of bright red blood. What could be the causes of this and what should I do to help her?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If you are seeing spots of blood on the stool now, it is likely secondary to the diarrhea that she had which caused a bit of inflammation in the colon. It sounds as if the diarrhea has resolved but you are seeing a small amount of blood. I would not be too concerned about this and would continue feeding a bland diet until the srool is back to 100% normal. I would also consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina fortiflora. If the blood does not go away after 3 to 5 days or worsens then I would have a veterinarian examined her and test a fecal sample for signs of intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed

I am so sorry to hear that Jar is having such a hard time with diarrhea. Diarrhea that continues for more than a few days, or is associated with blood in the stool, vomiting, lethargy or a poor appetite is a reason for a visit to your veterinarian. Since it sounds like Jar has had diarrhea for a few days and now has blood in it, it sounds like it's time to see your veterinarian. There are anti-diarrheal medications that they can prescribe and may also recommend a probiotic to help resolve the diarrhea. In the meantime, if she is eating and drinking normally, we will often recommend a bland easily digested diet consisting of ½ cooked white rice and ½ cooked white meat chicken (boiled without any skin or bones). If she does well with a bland diet and her diarrhea resolves, then you can slowly transition back to her normal diet over a few days. I am attaching a couple of articles below for you as well.
