My outdoor cat keeps scratching his head and neck; why won't it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 6 years and 4 months old | 7 lbs

Hi, I have a 6 year old tom who very rarely comes home, he pretty much lives outdoors in a dog kennel and I seldom see him. He came to me a few weeks ago with fur missing all over the back of his head and neck and lots of sore look scrapes that were bleeding slightly-nothing too deep-just surface wounds. I assumed it was a fight he had gotten into but now I'm wondering if there may be a skin problem as he won't let it heal he keeps scratching all the cuts open again.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Zack! I agree, I think he may have an underlying skin issue! He could have allergies or fleas that are causing the scratching. He could also have ring worm or a mite infection. Regardless of the cause I think Zack should see a Veterinarian as soon as you can! I can't imagine he isn't miserable by the look of things and the Vet can helps him feel better! I hope this helps and I wish Zack a speedy recovery!
