My new pet isn't using the bathroom & chews cords. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 4 months and 17 days old | 11.8 lbs

I brought daisy home yesterday at 2, and she still hasn’t gone to the bathroom. Is that normal? It is now 6am. Also, how do I get her to stop chewing electrical cords?

Good morning and thanks for your post on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It can be normal for just adopted or purchased pets to take a little while to get use to going to the bathroom when they first arrive to their new home. If Daisy hadn't eaten or drank much yesterday due to travel, etc, then this could explain why she hasn't felt the need to go. Offer fresh water and good food for her to eat this morning and keep the litter box clean. The electric cords are concerning as many injuries can happen to cats who do this. I would try and make the cords as inaccessible as possible by tying them up, using cord covers, cord wraps, etc. Make sure she has a lot of chew toys around for her to be engaged in. If she tries to chew on a cord, take a toy and get her attention so she is distracted away from the cord but is given something else more appropriate instead. If this technique is used, she will learn her toys are more interesting than the cords and will stop chewing on the cords. Hope this helps!
