My older dog is limping. Is it safe to give him Tylenol for pain?

Is it okay to give your pet Tylenol arthritis medicine at half a dosage I have an older dog that he is limping around he does this from time to time

No, Tylenol is never safe to give to dogs. It contains acetaminophen which is toxic to dogs. Please do not give this to Deuce. I would have him seen by a vet if he's limping. The vet can diagnose what is causing the pain and limping, and can prescribe safe pain medication for him. I hope this helps!

Poor Teddy! Do not give him tylenol or any other human pain medication. Dog's livers are different than ours and human pain medications can potentially cause liver (or kidney) damage. If he is in enough pain to need pain medication, then he needs to be examined by the veterinarian for pet safe pain medication. Since Teddy can't talk, only a physical exam will be able to determine the source of the lameness. Just like people, the pain/limping can be related to many causes including a ligament tears, soft tissue injury or even a hair line fracture. If Teddy will not bear weight on the foot, he needs to be examined today. if Teddy will walk on it and is only limping, you may try strict rest for a few days (no walks, running, jumping or stairs). You can apply a cool (not cold) compress to the area you think is the cause of pain for 5 minutes every hour. A gentle massage can also help if Teddy seems to enjoy it. If Teddy does not improve after a few days or if he gets worse, have him exa

Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Arthritis can happen in older dogs as you know. However, this is not the only condition that can cause lameness like that. I do not recommend using paracetamol without a veterinary evaluation. There are other arthritis supplements that you can start which would not hurt if this happens to not be due to arthritis and if it is, they can help a good amount. There are several joint supplements out there such as Cosequin and Dasuquin, among others. I would encourage you to start with that and if no improvement is observed, Rodger should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day! No, I would not give these pain medications to Dexter. Many human pain medications are toxic to dogs, and can be fatal if given. Paracetamol is toxic to dogs in large enough doses. I recommend resting Dexter until he sees the vet on Monday. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done.

My 18 yr old chiuhauha has been waking up crying in pain and not able to stand on one of her legs.This started about a month ago.Do you think it's a sudden onset of osteoarthritis?and can I give her children's Tylenol?
Please do not give Asia Tylenol! This can and does cause acetaminophen toxicity, and is not safe to give to her. It could be that she has arthritis, but she could have also strained or torn a muscle or ligament. She could have also broken a bone. It's quite serious this has been going on for a month and she needs veterinary care as soon as possible. The vet can diagnose what is causing her pain and how best to treat it. Please take her into a vet.

Unfortunately, your choices of OTC medications for pain are limited as most can be toxic or have a very narrow margin of safety. Ideally, you should have your dog examined by your veterinarian. A medication, such as Metacam (meloxicam) or Rimadyl (carprofen), may be dispensed if indicated. For now, restrict activity to just leash walks for elimination. Alternating warm and cool compresses may also relieve discomfort. Other alternative treatments include acupuncture or cold laser therapy.

Do not give him any over the counter human pain relievers as they can be toxic to dogs. He should be examined by a vet to treat any problems that he is having. He may need an antibiotic and anti-inflammatory and your vet can prescribe the right medications to treat his problems.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Boop by Petco. I'm sorry to hear that Eva injured her leg! Unfortunately, there are no safe human pain medications that can be given to dogs. Medications such as Advil, Aspirin or Tylenol can be fatally toxic to dogs, and should not be given. They can also interfere with medications that your veterinarian will want to prescribe when he/she sees Eva on Monday. The best thing you can do to help Eva in the meantime is restrict her activity. If she has a crate, I recommend keeping her in this during the day and night, except for taking her out on a leash to urinate/defecate outside 3-4 times per day. If you don't have a crate, keeping her restricted to one room in the house where she cannot run or jump on/off things will be the most helpful. If you feel that Eva is in too much pain - i.e. she is whining or crying constantly - she should be seen by an emergency veterinarian and you should not wait until Monday. I hope this is helpful!

You should not give your dog hydrocodone unless it was prescribed by your vet, it is a very strong and dangerous medication and it can only be given under very specific circumstances. Tylenol should never be given to a dog. in most cases for severe pain your vet will prescribe a combination of Rymadil or Metacam with Tramadol, these are all prescription meds as well which you can only get through your vet.
