My dog's third eyelid is visible and she's lethargic. Help at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Basset Hound | Female | spayed | 60 lbs

My basset is 7 yrs old. No recent shots or known allergies. 2 days ago her 3rd eyelid started to appear in one of her eyes. We did a warm massage and she rested. It went down. Ow it is back and in both eyes. She is lazier than normal but appetite is good. She is drinking, eating and excreting fine. We cannot get her to get until Monday. What could possibly be the issue and what can we do at home to help in the meantime.

It can be a sign there is eye irritation or infection in or around the eye, or it may be sign there is something else going on and she doesn't feel well. Look for any redness in the eye or cloudiness or mucoid discharge. You can take her temperature with a rectal thermometer to see if she is running a fever (normal is 100-102.5). All you can do is rinse her eyes with sterile eye drops such as Artificial tears and keep them clean until you can get her seen by the vet. If her appetite decreases or she begins to feel more lethargic, then I would try to get her seen sooner.
