Is my dog's vaccine with leptospirosis the same as DHPP? Is it safe?

Is Distemper-Parvo combination vaccine (annual*) that includes : Distemper, parvo, hepatitis adenovirus 2, leptospirosis, parainfluenza the same as DHPP? The mobile pet vaccine clinic offer these product. Is it safe? Why it is different than the one I see like it include only Distemper, parvo, hepatitis, and parainfluenza. Does DHPP require? My dog is 9 yrs old.

DHPP does not contain leptospirosis, so that is the difference. Leptospirosis is an infection of bacterial spirochetes, and it is zoonotic meaning it can be passed to humans. It will also make your dog extremely sick. Yes the vaccine is safe, and it's highly recommended to give it to your dog to prevent her from getting this horrible diseases. I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Panacur is a medication, it is a dewormer. I have not found it to be dangerous for any breed or size dog. Leptospirosis is a bacteria excreted in wild animal urine. A dog or human can get this bacterial infection from ingesting contaminated water or the bacteria can penetrate wounds. It causes kidney and liver failure. Dogs get very sick with this infection and can die. If Nacho will hike, go swimming, camping, you live in a city and he may drink from puddles (rat urine) or you have water on your property you should vaccinate him. Again, I have not found that a particular breed is more sensitive that another to the vaccine. Since Nacho is small I would not give him the Leptospirosis vaccine with the DHPP. I would separate it out and give it by itself. I personally do not give tony dogs too many vaccines at once. He needs 2 vaccines for leptospirosis, 3 weeks apart then yearly. Leptospirosis spp vaccine is not a core vaccine and should only be given if necessary, i.e. if your dog has access to water (ponds, ditches, rivers, etc.) where rats may live and urinate in the water. DPP is vaccine against distemper, distemper, hepatitis (canine adenovirus-2 and -1), parvovirus, and parainfluenza., parvovirus, and parainfluenza and is one of the necessary core vaccines. It would be better to also include vaccination against hepatitis (canine adenovirus-2 and -1). Lyme vaccine is also a non-core vaccine ans should only be given if called for in your area. Your veterinarian will be able to advise you more specifically.

What are the vaccines a dog need
Great question! Your dog needs a combination vaccine containing DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, and parainfluenza), as well as a rabies vaccine. If leptospirosis is a problem in your area, then I would recommend having your dog get a lepto vaccine. A kennel cough vaccine would be recommended as well if your dog will be placed in kennels at any time over the next year.

Hello, and thank you for your question. The combo vaccine for DA2PP + leptospirosis is usually given at 12 weeks or older, so if Nena is 5 months, it should be safe to administer. I would also recommend having your pet examined by a veterinarian first, and for the vet to determine and administer the appropriate vaccines as well. Shyla is so cute! She needs the vaccine, Sherry, the lepto in it isn't dangerous for her. Contracting either lepto or distemper would be extremely dangerous for her. I urge you to have her vaccinated. Best of luck.

Hi! I recently got a miniature dachsund puppy, and the breeder said we should research the Lepto Vaccine. She suggested we shouldn’t do the vaccine because these dogs can have reactions to it. What should we do?
Lepto is transmitted in the urine of other animals (foxes, other dogs, smaller wild animals). Many dogs are exposed and have no signs whatsoever. But an unlucky 10% or less develope kidney damage requiring hospitalization. Occasionally the damage is irreversible. For me and my pets, it’s not worth that risk. But if your Twix will be almost entirely indoors (no camping, dog parks, etc.) it may not make sense to vaccinate. Also Depending on how common lepto is in your area, it may be more or less likely that Twix is exposed. With the newer lepto vaccines, we are not seeing any more anaphylactoid reactions than any other vaccine (<1%). However, I AM seeing more pain and lethargy associated with this vaccine than other vaccines. Since Twix shouldn’t be out and about yet anyway, I’d probably hold off and do it by itself after his other puppy vaccines are finished. Best of luck to you and Twix!

It depends on what is listed on the label of the vaccine. Please check it to be sure it lists leptospirosis. To answer your second question we have to know what the supplement is for in order to know if it is safe for the kidneys. Are we treating the kidneys? Are we treating for arthritis? Some supplements are filtered by the kidneys while others aren't. Also most medications are safe for most pets as long as there isn't already a kidney malfunction already there. Just because it is filtered by the kidneys does not mean it will automatically cause problems with the kidneys. Vaccine reactions can vary widely, similar to humans. Mild symptoms include injection site tenderness, and transient lethargy (24 hours or so). Contact you veterinarian if lethargy persists, he stops eating, vomits, or has diarrhea. Emergency intervention would be respiratory distress, swollen face or a severe change in temperament due to fever/ more severe illness than listed above. These types of reactions are very rare. For my patients that show even mild vaccine reactions, I will reduce their vaccines to 1 booster per visit, and often will pre-medicate with Benadryl. I also prioritize my vaccines based on age of the animal, vaccine history and prevalence of disease in our region.

What a pretty girl! No, it's not recommended to give any vaccines during pregnancy in dogs. I would wait until after she's had her puppies and is finished nursing them, then update her vaccines at that time :)

Yes, the distemper/parvo (DHPP) combination vaccinations that we use in puppies are the same as those we use in adults, but some of the ingredients in some of the combination vaccinations are not given until the puppies are older. I would recommend speaking to your veterinarian about which viruses should be included in puppies vaccinations, but they are generally canine distemper, infectious hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus.
