My dog is limping with a swollen leg. Should I go to an emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 11 years and 11 months old | 60 lbs

My 12 year old lab fell down three stairs today and landed on his right rear leg and has been limping ever since. He does walk on his other 3 legs and has been moving around and will allow me to move his leg around and massage without whimper so it doesn't appear broke. The vets are closed until Monday my question is should I seek an emergency vet or watch him for the next 2 days. His right rear leg is swollen and he has had problems with it before from over use.

Yes, I would take him to an emergency vet or if you can, find a regular vet clinic open on Saturdays which will be less expensive. It's up to you but I think it would not be nice to make him wait too long to see a vet. The swelling is worriesome. Even if he is not showing you outward pain he is pain or he would be putting the leg down. You would be surprised at the number of dogs I have seen with fractures that acted like it didn't hurt them. Since there has been issues with this leg in the past it is best to get it evaluated. At the very least you can get him some medications to make him feel better until you can see your vet.
