My dog's penis is out after injury. Can Neosporin prevent infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | unneutered | 7 months and 22 days old | 48 lbs

My dog was hit by a truck 1 week ago. Vet said nerve damage without running tests and said to put him down since he can't go potty by himself anymore. However he started going potty by himself again today. My concern now is his penis is still out and has been for 4 days. Its not swollen nearly like it was but I'm worried he will get an infection. Can I apply neosporin to keep this from happening?

Poor Capone, it sounds like his recovery has been rough. I suggest instead of using neosporin, use KY jelly or another water based lubricant as they are more gentle to the sensitive tissue of his penis. Your vet may suggest applying a suture to the end of his sheath to keep the penis inside the sheath and reduce swelling. I know it sounds odd but applying sugar to the area can draw out fluid and reduce swelling allowing it to return to its normal place. You might want to get a second opinion from a different vet who can determine whether any other long term damage has been caused.
