Kitten had diarrhea, now constipated after food change. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 2 months and 15 days old | 2.4 lbs

adopted a 10 week old kitten w/ diarrhea from HSP. The vet said she thought it was dietary, in foster he and his brother had been treated for worms and had been on an antibiotic. He is very active and playful. started out with dry food, diarrhea continued, so stopped food for 18 hrs then gave plain chicken breast, diarrhea has stopped but now its been 2 days neither he or his brother has pooped. What Now ?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the kittens aren't straining to defecate, are eating and not vomiting the poop will come. I would get them on a different brand of kitten food after you see a normal stool from each. Cats can stay on just a chicken diet since it is deficient in the specific nutrients cats need. I recommend Hill's science diet kitten food or Purina kitten food. You can also add a probiotic to their food, I like Purina Fortiflora which can be found online. I hope this helps and good luck!
