My dog has a dry cough for months, but no other symptoms. Is it allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Maltese | Female | 13 years and 4 months old

My dog has been kind of coughing lately, few months, isn't short of breath, eats, drinks, no weight loss or gain, but has like a dry cough or like she is trying to clear her throat. Her tongue and tummy and gums are pink, but she has this cough with a hack at the end, like she tries to clear her throat, Could this be allergies? I keep reading about heart disease and that scares me but her symptoms don't really match that.

I would recommend a veterinary visit for Tootsie. At her age I would want to evaluate any cough that has lasted more than a few days. Cough can be due to heart disease but other conditions such as primary lung disease, collapsing trachea, a tracheal mass, parasites,or kennel cough or pneumonia can also cause a cough. After physical exam and listening to her heart and lungs the veterinarian will then discuss what they feel maybe going on. They may recommend doing chest x-ray's or sedating for a more complete oral exam. Many of these conditions can benefit from medication so it is worth a vet visit as soon as you're able to try to catch any disease process early. Even though she is having no other signs, a cough that has lasted this long should be evaluated. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
