My dog's limp is improving, but her paw is swollen. Should I use Epsom salts?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Entlebucher Mountain Dog | Female | spayed | 14 years and 10 months old | 40 lbs

My dog has been limping the last 2 days - I thought it was her arthritis acting up, however, today, she is licking her paw and I noticed one of her toe pads is swollen. Her limp has been gradually getting better over the last couple of days - should I just continue to have her rest and soak the paw in Epsom salts?

If she seems to be getting better than you could soak her paw in a warm Epsom salt solution and rest her and see if it completely resolves. Otherwise, she should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat. She may need an antibiotic and/or an anti-inflammatory.
