My kitten fought a cat, now he's wheezing and smells bad. What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 23 days old | 3 lbs

My kitten (three months old) was in a fight with a neighbor's older cat. He was bitten on the ear and scratched in several places. We used cat shampoo on him, but he is still not himself (playful, etc.) and purrs like he is wheezing. His breath and body also smell funny. I really hope he'll be fine. This cat keeps on coming back and fighting with my kitten. What should I do? Please help me. Thank you!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear your kitten is having issues with another cat. I would be concerned if he is feeling off that he could have gotten an infection or an abscess from his wounds from the fight. He may need antibiotics or pain medications to feel better, and I would have him seen by his regular veterinarian . I would also recommend keeping your cat indoors to ensure he can't get into a fight with the other cat. Good luck!
