My cat's lump popped and is oozing pus. Does she need a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 6 years and 8 months old

A lump appeared on my cats side a few days ago, was going to ring a vet the next day but it had popped over night leaving a hole in her side, now the hole is seeping cloudy white substance with a little blood which my cat keeps cleaning, should I take my cat the vet or will my cats cleaning be enough as she is still eating and acting her usual happy self?

This is an abscess and the white substance is puss. These are often caused by something under the skin that gets infected. It could be a thorn or from a bite. It's best if a vet examines this and explores the wound, because if the cause of the infection is not removed, then the infection will never clear. Sometimes these infections have potential to cause infections elsewhere, or can get worse, so a vet may need to prescribe medication to prevent this. For now, keep the area clean by flushing with water twice a day. I hope that helps and Mittens gets better soon.
