My long-haired cat has poop stuck under tail. Should I be concerned?

My long-hair, fixed male cat has a large clump of feces stuck under his tail. He isn't happy being handled, and would be hard to get to the vet. I've cleaned some with a warm towel, and been badly scratched in the process. He is scooting, but eating well. Do I need to be concerned? Thanks. Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 15 lbs
