My cat has fever, lethargy, and won't eat after obstruction surgery.

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 8 years and 8 months old | 8.5 lbs

My cat had emergency surgery to remove an obstruction (he ate my hair tie), they milked it through his colon. That was a month ago. Since then he has struggled with eating (on stimulants now) & he appears to have a fever & lethargy that waxes/wanes. He tested neg for leukemia/aids, neg urinalysis, blood panel was good except for a slightly elevated white blood cell count. They are telling me they think he has IBD but it doesn't explain fever. I'm at a loss

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without knowing Riggins case it is hard to say. You said they milked the hair tie through the colon. Did they check the entire GI tract for more? The fever usually means infection but it could also be inflammation. Short of doing another exploratory surgery, I would recommend an abdominal ultrasound to get a good look at all the organs and the layers of the intestinal tract. You may still need to do surgery to get biopsies of the organs. I hope this gives you a starting point. Good luck and kisses to Riggins!
