My cat keeps chewing shoelaces. Why and how can I make it stop?

My boyfriend's cat keeps chewing and/or chewing off my shoelaces. Every single pair, without fail. Is this atypical? Or, like in many cases, is this just a cat being a cat? Either way, is there a solution to stop this behaviour? Thank-you! Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed
