Why is my senior cat pulling out his fur? Pain, anxiety, or other?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 7 lbs

Why does my cat pull his fur out? My cat is 17 and has been pulling his fur out for past few years got told it was seasonal anxiety. However his hair pulling is getting worse pulling it out along his spine, ankles, and belly also his tail... his skin is not inflamed red or sore. He is flead regularly and seems happy in himself but has got increased appetite too.

This behavior of pulling hair out not only could be behavioral but could very well be due to discomfort. Being an older cat, it is likely that tig has a degree of arthritis. He may be exhibiting this behavior due to arthritic pain. I would have him examined by your vet in order to receive the most appropriate treatment such as pain medications. If that does not help, it may just be behavioral or even an allergy. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns. I am also available via consultation if needed.
