Why is my cat with kidney disease not eating, lethargic, and gagging?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 9 years and 2 months old | 8.8 lbs

My cat recently got diagnosed with CRF in early stages. Creatinine was 2.8 from range 0.8-1.8 and BUN was 45 from max 30. After 3 days at tge vet for fluids, creatinine dropped to 2.4, and BUN to 28. After a week at home he grew increasingly lethargic, didnt like renal food, and started eating less and less. Taking 1/2 pill of fortekor. Took him to another vet midweek, analysys showed the values where the same. Doesnt eat either renal or the food he used to love. Started getting gag reflex

Poor Hulk! He may not be eating because of nausea so your vet could try an anti-nausea medication called Cerenia and Pepcid (an antacid) and see if that helps him eat. Your vet can also teach you how to give him subcutaneous fluids at home to help keep his kidney values down. Your vet could also try an appetite stimulant (Mirtazapine, Cyproheptadine) to increase your cats appetite and get him eating again.
