My cat's leg tumor is draining & swelling. What can I do until a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 11 years and 2 months old | 15 lbs

My 11 year old male cat has a fatty tumor on his leg. Our vet said it is benign and not interfering so it would be OK. Recently it has gotten bigger, draining and his foot is swelling. I recently lost my job so I am having a hard time finding a vet to look at him. I wrap it with antibiotic ointment and the swelling goes down but then comes back. Anything I can do until I can figure out how to get him to a vet?

Poor guy. Some tumors can for so big that they stretch the skin so much that it opens the skin up. This likely requires surgical removal of the entire mass. I would continue the antibiotic as long as it is safe for use in pets. I would also recommend cleaning it with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water on the first day, then sterile saline flushes thereafter until you can get him in to the vet. Here is also a website link with financial assistance programs to try. http://m.humanesociety.org/animals/resources/tips/trouble_affording_veterinary_care.html Best wishes with Max and his leg. I hope he gets better soon.
