My kitten keeps getting litter in its eyes. What should I do?

These little litter granules can get caught in the paws. I suspect as Leo gets older he will get better at grooming these off of himself. You can rinse Leo's feet in water and these will likely come right off. If the litter is really getting clumped in the paw you could change litter type to something like Yesterday's News litter. There can be a couple of reasons why she will not use the litter box. Cats like a very clean box, and the litter should be scooped every day with the litter itself being changed once a week. If the box isn't clean enough for her, she won't use it. Cats can also be very picky about the type of litter used. If you changed litter recently, she may not like it and won't want to use it. Don't use scented litters, cats typically don't like the scent and will not use the box if it smells funny to them. I would use an unscented litter only. The litter box itself may be a problem. It could be too small for her to turn around in, or if it has a cover, she may not like using the box under a cover. Conversely, if it doesn't have a cover, she may not like going to the bathroom in the open. Cats also won't use a litter box that is too close to their food and water sources, so if the litter box is close to those, she won't use it. She most likely will need a course of antibiotics from your local vets to get better, but as they are closed now, you need to keep cleaning the sticky discharge with warm, boiled water and cotton buds. Using eye soothing eye drops should be helpful too. The grey membrane is possibly a protruding third eye lid - common finding in cats with eye infections. As soon as your vets are open, please take Mozza to be checked over and to start antibiotics treatment.

Poor Abby! I would recommend trying to keep the eye clear and open by using a warm clean washcloth to wipe away any debris that may be crusting the eye shut. Keeping an Elizabethan (cone) collar can also keep her from rubbing or pawing at the eye which may help reduce irritation until your vet can take a look.

What a cute little kitten! Gemma may have a touch of conjunctivitis (an inflammation of the pink tissues in the eye), which is usually caused by a virus or bacteria. This is really common in young kittens, and does require a visit to your vet. You might consider just calling them up as she was just there on Thursday - they may be able to squeeze you in soon. Hello. Most of these kitties have a viral infection of the eyes often complicated with a secondary bacterial component. Other than keeping the eyes clear by gently cleaning with warm water a few times a day, there is not much more you can do except having the kitten seen & treated by a veterinarian. Persians have such compressed eye sockets that the normal amount of tears that every cat has ends up tearing in a Persian. Also because the eyes have more exposure they probably create a little more tear film. Nothing will “fix” this. However, rinsing with isotonic saline can help rinse any debris out and keep the cornea as healthy as possible. I would keep doing that. If the eyes are red or if the discharge is green the. It is a good idea to wipe away the discharge with a warm clean wash cloth or soft tissue. I suggest a cloth soaked with warm water or eye wash solution - every 1-3hrs is plenty often enough. Your vet will examine Sprinkles, maybe suggest an eye stain test to check for corneal ulcers (which can occur with feline herpes), and will probably dispense an antibiotic ointment.
