My puppy cries and barks in her playpen. Is it separation anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 1 month and 29 days old | 14 lbs

I created a play area with a gate for my 9 week old. In a large area. I put her crate, toys, water and pee pad in there with her. I've tried putting her in there when I'm home and not home and she just barks and whines the entire time unless I go in there with her. What can I do to ensure her its her area and she is safe? Is this seperation anxiety?

Please leave her in there with a radio on and quietly leave the house for an hour or so. When you come home don't talk with Eclaire, just take her outside for a potty break. I would do this several times a day and gradually increase the time you leave her. When you are home you need to ignore the whining, soon she will understand that the whining will not get you to come in with her. You also can place her in a smaller mostly solid crate for short periods of time so she learns to be confined and is safe. This is not separation anxiety yet but if you continue to react and comfort her when she crys she will not learn to be relaxed when by herself. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Eclaire.
