vet says that tonys SDMA is 13, high normal, early stages of kidney disease. He should be on a diet that is phosphorus restricted & of all the senior diets I've tried he likes best Purina pro plan focus adult 11+ salmon & tuna. Of all the senior diets this has the most phosphorus at 1.5% dry matter & 0.35% as fed. This seems like too much. What's a acceptable amount of phosphorus for tonys condition? We've tried some senior rx diets, he disliked them & vet says it's Not yet tme for a renal Diet

I don't have a completely simple answer for you, but I can give you a chart for comparing phosporus levels in different foods. http://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf For maintenance diets, AAFCO minimum for phosphorus is 1.25 g/1000 Kcal (1.25% on a dry matter basis) so, if you are looking for non-prescription diets, there will be none lower than that, so you can try to look for diets that are closer to that value. I hope that was helpful! Thanks for using PetCoach.
