Why is my dog straining with bloody diarrhea after eating a mouse?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 24 days old

My dog has been having fresh blood following his diahorrea for the last 2 days. He's been to the vet, they emptied his anal glands. He ate a dead mouse and threw it up yesterday, could this be the cause for the diahorrea and blood? He also strains when he tries to poo sometimes only passing a few drops of blood.

It sounds like your dog has a severe case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon. The information can cause diarrhea and bloody stool. Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (like eating a dead mouse), food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. If Ziggy continues defecating blood (more than 48 hrs) I would recommend taking him in to the vet to be examined. He may need fluids to correct any dehydration, a fecal examination performed and antibiotics and/or probiotics to help the diarrhea clear up. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
