My dog has a hard, purple mass near her nipple. Could it be cancer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | spayed | 3 years and 8 months old | 119 lbs

Rosie had a cyst on her back hip that had severe drainage tracts. For months it would erupt. With antibiotics and epsom salt flushes I got it to heal finally. Now there is a large mass on her abdomen surrounding one her nipples. It is hard, purple and deep red. The skin is compromised and she is licking it incessantly. The vet put her on antibiotics again thinking it's a bite but I'm concerned she has cancer. Thoughts?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I agree with you and share your concern that it could be cancer. This could be be a mammary carcinoma, mast cell tumor, melanoma, among many other possibilities. I recommend you have Rosie evaluated by your veterinarian for a test called fine needle aspirate which is an easy, quick and pain-free procedure which in the majority of cases will help reach a diagnosis to identify what the best course of action is based on the findings. In some cases, a biopsy is needed for a diagnosis. If it is malignant and it has not spread to other locations, then surgical removal is recommended. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign.
