My power is out. What cat illness signs mean I need a vet or boarding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Sphynx | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 8 lbs

I've been without power because of Irma for 3 days, and it's looking like it's going to be many more. My cats are still active, eating, and drinking, but it could be Sunday before we get power. I can't afford to go anywhere else, but what signs should I be watching for in the cats to potentially take them to a vet or board them until the power is back?

Thanks for visiting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Poor kitties and so sorry you are going through this natural disaster with your pets. Well as long as the temperature is ok indoors they should be just fine. If the indoor temperature is too hot for you to tolerate, then it's probably too hot for your kitties too. Excessive panting, lethargy, not wanting to eat or drink are all signs of illness. However we want to prevent that from happening by boarding them, if needed. I hope everything works out well for your pets. Best wishes and take care.
