Why is my dog licking his paw pad? Could it be an allergic reaction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 months and 16 days old | 14 lbs

So a while ago we noticed that Thomas was limping, looked at his pad and saw this, he walks on it fine now but when he sits he holds it up, he also licks and chews at it, we had taken him to the vet bc he had a rash of some sort on his legs where he pulled the skin out of and sores on his lips that have flared up every now and then since we got him, the vet gave him antibiotics and they healed, then the thing on his pad showed up any idea what it is? Could it be an allergic reaction?

Ouch! Poor Thomas! It does look sore. I have seen this a few times in cats. Sometimes it can be a problem called eosinophilic complex. We do think it is associated with allergic disease. Sometimes it can be a sign of an autoimmune disease as well. I would definitely recommend following up with your veterinarian to see what their recommendations are. They may include antibiotics, possibly a biopsy, and sometimes steroids. I hope he gets better soon!
