My cat has a potbelly, loose stool, mucus, and sneezes. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 10 lbs

My cat has had a small potbelly since I adopted her close to three weeks ago. I noticed soon after that she would sneeze every once in a while but they were never violent or very often. She now has loose stool that contains a fair amount of mucus but otherwise she is still playful and has no loss of appetite. Should I be worried?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely gastrointestinal parasites based on your description. I recommend that you take her to your veterinarian to confirm this and get her on therapy for it. This would be very simple to treat and cats recover just fine. Enjoy your kitty!
