Is it normal for my cat to kick its face and bite its leg grooming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 8 months old

Is it true that it is normal reflex for a cat to kick itself in the face and then bite the kicking leg when it grooms its belly? I was about to take my cat to a vet because I thought it was compulsive behaviour, but now I read it's normal. Unfortunately the sources on that are sparce and the sources unknown, so I wanted to make sure.

Yes, a lot of cats will do that. I don't think I would be terribly worried about it. I would only worry if the cat was doing this behavior when it was not associated with grooming. Hope that helps. Best wishes!
