Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered | 12 lbs
My cat Bobbi has cut his foot pad. It looks bad however he isn't really limping, he is still acting his usual self and doesn't seem to be in pain. I'm in a difficult financial situation and can only pay for vet fees if it's absolutely necessary but is there anything I can do for my cat to help? Will it heal itself? Or do I need to take him to vet?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. The cut appears to be all of the way through the paw pad on the affected foot. I would suggest having this wound looked at by your vet if you can so that Bobbi can receive antibiotics and receive proper treatment. However, if you are unable to get to your vet, you could try and keep the foot clean using a diluted Betadine solution (mix Betadine with saline to get a weak brown tea color) and use this to clean the Wound. I would then switch to a different litter such as yesterday's news so that he is not getting fine litter sand in the wound. I would monitor the area for signs of swelling and discharge as this is going to be highly prone to infection. If you notice any signs of infection I would get him to your vet as soon as possible. I hope this helps! Please feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerns you may have. I am also available via phone or text based consultation if needed.

Poor Kaneki! He does sound painful if he's holding his paw up when sitting and limping (limping is a sign of pain in cats). I would gently clean the paw with warm water and an antiseptic soap. Do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. I would keep him indoors until the cut is healed, as going outside will cause it to get dirty and infected. I would not put any topical ointment on it either unless you have an Ecollar to keep him from licking it. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. If the cut is deep, then it will need sutures to fix. Kaneki will have to see a vet then to have it sutured closed. If paying for a vet is an issue, you can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Carefree Credit online. http://www.carefreecredit.co.uk https://www.rspca.org.uk/whatwedo/vetcare http://www.easipetcare.com If it isn't too deep, you can treat it as I suggested above, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see signs of redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see a vet right away.
