My cat's paw pads are crusty & pink. Should I stop using coconut oil?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Wirehair | Male | neutered | 7 years and 2 months old | 10 lbs

My cat has 2 front paw pads that are crusty and have pink patches. He's been licking it a lot and it's been hurting for 2 weeks. I've been using Organic Coconut Oil but I don't know if that's good enough.

Poor Tigger! It's possible the coconut oil is tasty, and thus causing him to lick more than he normally would, further irritating the foot pads. It would be best to stop using it and place an Elizabethan (cone) collar on Tigger for a few days to give his feet a chance to rest and heal. If the irritation doesn't resolve, or you see open wounds or sores on the feet, then having a vet examine it to rule out problems such as bacterial or yeast infections is best.
