12 week old kitten sudden patch of hair loss on side over back haunch. Dry a little flaky.. just got 3rd shot 4 days ago being given gentamicin sulfate opthalmic eye drops I put coconut oil on it?

Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Redness and/or hair loss over the back near the tail can have many causes. The most common cause however is flea allergy. If Murphy is not on a flea preventative, this could be a possibility, even if he in indoors. It only takes 1 flea to induce a flea allergy. Other causes may be a fungal infection, bacterial infection, food allergy or other environmental allergy. Coconut oil can help keep the area moist. I would recommend putting Murphy on a monthly flea preventative to rule out flea allergy as the cause. If it does not get any better in a week or so, I would see your veterinarian for a few skin tests. Thank you again for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
