My dog's red eye infection isn't getting better with drops. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | neutered | 4 years and 6 months old | 145 lbs

I have a 5 1/2 year old Rottweiler and he developed severe redness in the eye in just a few hours time 2 days ago. I took him to the vet yesterday and he said that it was an eye infection and gave a script for Neomycin and Polymyxin B sulfates and Dexamethasone drops to give 2 times per day. He has had 4 doses of this and doesn't seem to be better. What should we do now?

IF there is no change in the eye, then he needs to be rechecked to see if there is an ulcer or the infection is spreading and he may need oral antibiotics to help. The best thing to do until then is to continue the medicine to help control it from getting worse and give it a little more time
