Why is my kitten's urine dark and smelly? Could it be a UTI?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 7 days old | 5 lbs

I have 6-7month old russian blue nebulong kitten, not fixed. Named baby bluey. Rescued when 5weeks old same with his brother Whitey. He uses the liter box less then half the time, even new liter. He doesnt like touching the liter. I left empty kitty box and he peed in it. A very strong smell of urine and it was a darkish color. He is already eating urinary tract cat food due to another cat getting UTI/STONES from meow mix. Is it normal for his urine to smell really bad and darkish color?

The longer he holds his urine the darker in color and stronger odor it can have. Also if he dehydrated it has potential to make the urine a little darker. Since he has issues with a litter box, I would have his urine checked for a UTI or crystals to see if that is complicating the situation and causing some of these problems. You can also add canned food to make sure he is getting plenty of fluids
