You will need to ask your vet why he/she prescribed it on a weekly dosing. The typical dose is every 12-24 hours. The cause of liver toxicity from fluconazole is unknown and the severity of liver injury ranges from mild and transient to acute liver failure. Most patients recover when the fluconazole is stopped. I have prescribed anti-fungal medications frequently and have never had any problems, especially if the dog is young and healthy. If you are concerned, your vet could check liver values a few days after starting the medication to make sure here is no increase.
