My dog ate pecans and is vomiting. Should I worry about toxicity?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 20 lbs

Our 3 yr old schnauzer ate whole pecans from our yard. He threw up Friday morning and it contained some whole pecans plus food particles. He threw up again during the night Friday night--mostly liquid with a few food particles. Up until just a few hours ago, he was drinking water and having normal urination. Our concern now is the refusal of water/food and he is getting "lazy". Can you recommend any essential oils that might treat him.

Eating a large amount of pecans can be toxic to Tracker. Pecans contain levels of a poison called Aflatoxin, which dogs are very sensitive to and can easily fall ill from it. Dogs will show lethargy, vomiting, and anorexia. In addition, pecans are very high in fat, which can cause pancreatitis in dogs. They can also develop liver failure from eating too many pecans. Tracker needs to see a vet right away if he's been vomiting and is now refusing to eat or drink. Essential oils will not treat this (and many are toxic to dogs if ingested), he needs medical attention from a vet right away. Please take him into a vet now.
