Is it safe to spay my dog after heat with conflicting vet advice?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My yellow lab is 15 months old and started her 1st heat one week ago. I took her to my vet for a check up and everything is good. He wants to spay her in a month (5 weeks after her heat started). I just read an article that said spaying right after a heat cycle is not a good idea, what is your opinion? I trust my vet and her feels it's not a problem, but conflicting information is always tough to deal with. My last lab was spayed at 6 months old and died of a resulting infection at 9 months old.

While it's true there may be an increased risk spaying right after a heat due to the increased blood flow to the uterus, there are many vets who spay dogs right after a heat. I can certainly understand how conflicting information is tough to deal with, but if you trust your vet, I would trust his judgement :-)
