My new rescue dog isn't eating, drinking, or pooping. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I got my dog about 2 weeks ago as a sort of rescue dog, I found him outside with bite marks bloodied and cold and scared, I took him in, treated his wounds, fed and watered him and cleaned him. In a few days he was 100x more lively and now follows me around everywhere. I am a little worried though about him because he isn't eating as much as I think he should be and he barely ever drinks any water. Also he hasn't (for lack of a better word) pooped in probably 4 or 5 days. Would you have advice?

It is unusual for a rescue dog not to have a good appetite and be very grateful to receive a full meal - I recommend you schedule a full vet check in order to identify any illness or injury which may be affecting his appetite, In the meantime, small meals of warm, soft food and some added canned pumpkin may help to improve his bowel movements

It sounds like mama has been through a stressful few days. I would not be concerned yet that she is not eating or drinking period I would provide a quiet, dim room for her to rest in and leave the food and water for her. If she has not taken a drink within eight hours or if she appears ill or has vomiting or diarrhea I would recommend that you have her seen by a veterinarian. She may just need some time to get used to her surroundings.
