Why is my cat not eating and vomiting after urinary block treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 6 years and 5 months old

My cat went to the vet yesterday and was eating fine before hand. He was treated for a urinary block and given medication he was passing a little urine. He hasn't eaten since we came home and has been sick a few times.

Poor Nox! Not eating and vomiting are both very common signs of a urinary blockage, so I would be concerned that he may be blocked again. Unfortunately, it's quite common for this to recur in the first 24-48 hours after coming home from the vet's office. Another possibility is that he isn't tolerating his medication well, which can also cause nausea and vomiting - but regardless, I would recommend having him rechecked by your vet right away because if he's blocked again, this is a life-threatening emergency. If it does turn out that he has another urinary blockage, the recommended treatment at that point is often surgery to widen the urethral opening - this may be something you want to speak to your vet about, if it's determined that this is the problem again.
