My puppy's eyes are gunky, red, and itchy. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | unneutered | 30 lbs

Noticed that 5 month old border collie had some greenish eye discharge on Saturday afternoon. By Sunday afternoon discharge was less in amount and yellowish white in color and the whites of his eyes are somewhat bloodshot. This morning when he woke he rubbed his eyes with his paws like they itched but otherwise his behavior is completely normal. I've been gently wiping the gunk away with a warm wash cloth. Should I take him to the vet for meds, or is this clearing up in its own?

Even if from your description it sounds like a conjunctivitis, I would recommend to take Blaze to your veterinarian for a check up as sometimes more severe corneal or in general eye injury could be present in these cases. The fact that the eyes are potentially itchy could suggest the presence either of an infection or an allergy.

No, itchy eyes and green discharge aren't normal in dogs. Jingle could have conjunctivitis or an ulcer in one or both of his eyes. He needs to be seen by your regular vet when they are next open so that he or she can examine him and determine what the problem is.
