My cat is throwing up yellow bile, hiding, and not drinking. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | unneutered

My 4yr old Tom cat started bringing up yellow bile yesterday about 7 times, stopped drinking water and is trying to hide behind things. He is normally a loving cat with me and always sits on my knee but when I try stroke him he doesn't want to know and wags his tail hard which he never does. My partner said it will just be a bad stomach as our other 2 cats were ill for a couple of days and bounced back but he's been sick 3 times this morning and I'm scared of dehydration. He is an indoor cat.

It sounds as Storm is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

I would consider this a medical emergency, and I would take Mr. Kitty into a vet right now. It's very serious when a cat doesn't eat, and when they do not eat for going on 72 hours, they develop a fatty liver which is fatal without treatment. He needs veterinary care now to prevent this from happening. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Best of luck.
