My puppy has diarrhea. Is it from eating a stick or dog park treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 28 days old | 7 lbs

My puppy had a lot of diarrhea last night at 5AM. Later outside, he pooped well. Then his second poop was sloppy. Now he's had unexpected diarrhea again. I can think of 2 reasons why he might be having diarrhea. 1) He swallowed a piece of a stick he found outside yesterday. 2) While at the dog park, I caught someone feeding him what seemed to be treats. I'm really hoping they didn't poison my dog, so could it be the stick that's the culprit? Should I be worried? Besides this, he seems normal.

There can be lots of possibilities for diarrhea in a puppy, including food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, intestinal foreign body (such as a stick), dietary indiscretion (such as eating something at the park), bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. I would continue to monitor Cloud for a decrease in appetite or vomiting. If you see these things, or if the diarrhea hasn't improved by tomorrow, I would recommend that he be checked out by a vet. I can't think of any common poisons that would cause only diarrhea and not vomiting or lethargy.
