My doctor says I got pasteurella from my cat. Does he need treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Been on and off with strep virus and they ran some labs which came back positive for pasteruella. Doctor told me it was very likely that I got it from a pet. If my cat does have pasteurella and I got it from him, does this mean I need to take him to the vet to go get checked out? Does he need to be on antibiotics as well? If untreated can it be fatal?

Pasteurella is often an opportunist bacteria, which means that it's usually hanging around on the body somewhere and will grow and cause disease when the environment is right. It's not a bug that tends to be very infectious from one animal to another. It's interesting that your doctor is suspicious that your cat for the infection...this is not a disease that we vets are usually concerned about people getting from animals. If your cat is otherwise seeming in normal health, then there would be no indication for treatment. If he does have some condition, then it would be good to take him to the vet and explain what your doctor told you. I hope that helps and you feel better soon.
