What are these red scabs on my cat's face and how can I treat them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 18 years and 7 months old

Was wondering if anyone could tell me what these red marks are on my cats face. We are washing it with warm water everyday to stop it scabing over (which is a black scab). Is there anything we can use to reduce the redness on his face? As it seems to be bothering him. Thank you.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Fanta! It looks like an it of moist dermatitis and will likely need antibiotics. I would recommend taking him in to see your vet as soon as you can to get started and likely they will prescribe pain medications as well. During the physical exam they may also aspirate the area for cytology-to rule out eosinophilia granuloma complex. Normally, Triple antibiotic is great to use on mount dermatitis-but they can't be allowed to ingest any of it (this is so close to the mouth I can't recommend using it). An ecollar will be needed to keep him from pawing at his face. I hope this helps and that he feels better soon!
