My cat had kittens. Does she need a dark room or quiet, safe space?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1 year old | 5 lbs

My cat just had kittens 3 days ago. I was wondering if she still needs to be in a dark room if we live in a basement so there's only my husband and I. The father of the babies is down here too, but so far he hasn't bothered her of the kittens. Is that something to worry about too?

Congratulations on your new kittens! the mother doesn't necessarily need to be in the dark, but she should have a quiet place where she feels safe to care for her kittens, especially if she is a first time mom. For this reason, if you have a separate room where she can stay or visit it may be best for the first week or two to keep her in this room when she is with the kittens so she doesn't feel threatened or nervous about her kittens coming to harm.
