My senior dog is vomiting and has diarrhea. Could it be her age?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Terrier | Female | spayed | 14 years and 11 months old | 17 lbs

Hi, For the past month or so, my dog has had terrible, intermittent stomach ache and vomiting, as well as diarrhoea and periods of not eating. She's 15 years old tomorrow - could it just be age, or something more? We've been thinking a stomach bug, but aren't sure.

I would recommend having Misty evaluated by her veterinarian. And intermittent vomiting and diarrhea is not a normal part of old age and should not last several weeks. Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by tocsin ingestion, parasites, pancreatitis or G.I. disease, or some endocrine disorders. Her vet will perform a physical exam and then discuss possible diagnostic testing they may recommend depending on exam findings. Many conditions are still easily treatable even in older dogs so I recommend getting misty checked soon to get her feeling better. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
