My cat's limping paw is smelly and not healing. Could it be fungal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed

I am looking after my neighbours cat, on the first day I noticed she was limping, I looked at her paw, it looked burned, I have been treating it with Savlon antiseptic wipes and savlon antiseptic cream but it's not touching it, I cleaned it today and it's smelly, I thought initially it was a burn but could it be fungal?

Hello and thank you for your question from across the pond! From the pictures, the paw looks ulcerated, red, and there is white mucoid discharge coming from the wound. It is likely infected and yes it may be fungal in nature or bacterial. Bad bacterial infections also tend to smell as well as fungal infections. My best advice would be to take Buttons into her veterinarian so the paw can be properly cleaned and banged. Buttons will likely need to receive an antibiotic as well. A sample of the discharge may be taken to diagnosis a bacterial or fungal infection. I hope this has helped and bet wishes to you and Buttons!
